Owens Cardiology is a speciality cardiology practice based in Waterford, Ireland. We provide a wide range of diagnostic tests at The Heart Clinic in the Williamstown Centre (beside WLRfm). We also provide a range of consultant cardiology and screening services. The practice is owned and managed by Dr Owens, a Consultant Cardiologist based at University Hospital Waterford and UPMC Whitfield.
Dr Patrick Owens qualified in 1991 from University College Dublin and trained in general and interventional cardiology in the Mater and Beaumont Hospitals in Dublin, the Manchester Royal Infirmary and Derriford Hospital, Plymouth UK. He practiced as a consultant in Cornwall and the South West of England during which time he was a senior Clinical Lecturer at the Peninsular Medical School, before returning to Waterford in 2009.
Since his return to Ireland, Dr Owens has developed the local cardiology service for the South East of Ireland introducing new techniques to the services such as rotational atherectomy and complex device therapy. During his training, he completed a postgraduate diploma in statistics, on the way to completing a post-graduate MD thesis.
In his role as a Consultant Cardiologist, Dr Owens specialises in a wide range of cardiology techniques. His subspecialty expertise is in interventional management of coronary heart disease, echocardiography and basic and complex cardiac device therapy.
Dr Owens’ research interests are wide-ranging, and include hypertension, molecular cardiology, cardiac risk factor management, various aspects of interventional cardiology, and device therapy for cardiac disorders.
He has published widely in scientific literature, and continues to be active in medical research, within the clinical sphere, and in collaboration with the Waterford Institute of Technology in the area of cardiac device development. Dr Owens is an established educationalist, and is on the founding faculty of an international echo training course, which continues to offer basic and advanced training in cardiac echocardiography.
